London, January l. This day at noon was performed before
their Majesties and the Royal Family, The following Ode,
written by William Whitehead, Esq; Poet Laureate, and set to
musick by Dr. Boyce, master of the King's band of musicians;
The vocal parts by Mr. Beard, the gentlemen and children of
the Chappel Royal, &c. the instrumental by His Majesty's
band, assisted by other principal performers.
ODE FOR THE NEW YEAR, JAN 1, 1767.
When first the rude, o'er-peopled North
Poured his prolifick offspring forth
At large, in alien climes, to roam,
And seek a newer better home,
From the bleak mountain's barren head,
The marshy vale, the ungrateful plain,
From cold and penury they fled
To warmer suns, and Ceres' golden reign.
At every step the breezes blew
Soft, and more soft; the lengthened view
Did fairer scenes expand:
Unconscious of approaching foes,
The farm, the town, the city rose
To tempt the spoiler's hand.
